Supporters of the Build Better Lives Campaign came together to contribute to this article in Euronews to raise awareness around the hot topic of the summer, energy poverty. Energy poverty has been typically associated with winter and people being not able to heat their homes. However, with a worsening climate crisis, overheating in homes has become a serious health risk for millions of people in Southern Europe.
Unfortunately, this problem is only going to get worse in the coming years and move northwards as Europe experiencing warmer summers. Europe needs to decarbonise its building stock to help mitigate climate crisis, but urgent measures are needed to now to adapt our homes, buildings and cities to the changing climate. Making both heating and cooling accessible, affordable, and renewable can protect millions of households who are living with heat stress. Insulating our homes can help keep our homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter, helping to directly address year-round energy poverty.
